Phased Array (PAUT)

With PAUT technology, we can do continuous inspections at 350°C (662°F). The high temperature PAUT NII inspection method is the ideal solution for weld flaw detection, corrosion mapping and the detection of other types of cracking.

Phased Array Inspections at high temperatures

Special high temperature resistant PAUT probes and wedges were designed for SonoInspec, to be used up to 475°C (887°F). The PAUT technology can be continuously used up to 350°C (662°F). The wedges are designed with cooling channels to keep the temperature under control. Special couplant and wedge material is used to accommodate the ultrasound beam travelling into the material. High temperature PAUT probes are made in a way that they can resist elevated temperatures.

Replacement for radiography

PAUT is the ideal solution for weld flaw detection & corrosion mapping

The high temperature PAUT NII inspection method is the ideal solution for weld flaw detection, corrosion mapping and the detection of other types of cracking. Up to 350°C (662°F) SonoInspec has standardised and validated the PAUT inspections as per the ISO pre-service standard for pressure equipment (EN-ISO 10863).

Phased Array PAUT inspection

Phased Array is one of the main ultrasonic testing technologies at SonoInspec

Phased Array Ultrasonic testing (PAUT) is one of the main ultrasonic testing technologies available at SonoInspec. PAUT probes are build up with several piezoelectric elements, which can be fired individually. The combination of these pulses, controlled by computer calculated timings, create the phase aspect of the technology. The ultrasonic beam can be focused, shaped and moved electronically.

Multiple ways of how the PA probe can be operated

For service work on site, we position the PA probe on a wedge. There are different ways how the probe can be operated. The beam can be positioned under an angle, or programmed in a way that several angles are covered (sectorial scan). The Total Focussing Method (TFM), which is also available on the SonoInspec equipment (VEO 3), is based on firing with one element and receiving with all elements. An algorithm reconstructs the received signals from all the shots and displays the signals in a 3D view, where focus is on all the pixel positions in the grid.

Advantages of PAUT over conventional UT:

  • PAUT is more accurate

  • PAUT reduces the false call rate

  • PAUT is much more efficient and faster, because of the software capabilities and electronic options for beam steering available

Increase your plant availability with PAUT

PAUT as an alternative for radiography inspections will increase your plant availability, since you do not have to abandon parts of your plant. PAUT is an excellent technology for inspection on complex geometries, like nozzles. PAUT can be used for weld inspections, corrosion inspections, monitoring, NII Inspections and inspections on small bore piping starting from 2” and larger diameters.

PAUT can be applied on different type of materials, like carbon steel, stainless steel and composites. PAUT of SonoInspec will increase your HSE performance, reduces your cost and increases your plant availability!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the influence of the temperature on the PA inspection?

Because of the temperature, the angle changes. You have to take this into account when you do your analysis!

How can you do continuous inspections with PAUT up to 350°C (662°F)?

We have PAUT probes and wedges which are specially designed for SonoInspec. The wedge is permanently cooled.

Can TFM be applied on high temperature?

We are currently investigating this.
